Augusta State will open the Division II Tournament with a familiar foe.
The team learned of its first-round opponent in the Southeast Regional while watching the NCAA selection show late Sunday night at the Jaguar Student Activities Center. The Jaguars will play host to Peach Belt division foe UNC Pembroke at 6 p.m. Saturday.
For the fifth year in a row, Augusta State will play host to the first three rounds of the Division II Tournament at Christenberry Fieldhouse, with the opening round held Saturday.
The Jaguars, the No. 1 seed, defeated the eighth-seeded Braves three times earlier this season, including in Sunday's conference championship game.
"You can't look past anybody," Augusta State senior guard Caleb Brown said. "We'll be ready."
Jaguars coach Dip Metress said his team is not 28-3. Instead, Augusta State is now 0-0 trying to get its first win of the new season.
"We have to understand this is it," Metress said. "You play well or you hang up your uniform."
Augusta State is riding a 46-game home winning streak. The Jaguars will have to push that number to 49 if they're going to make a fourth consecutive appearance in the Elite Eight in Springfield, Mass.
"It's a wonderful advantage," Brown said. "We have some of the best fans in the nation. It'll be a big boost for us."
The Augusta State-UNC Pembroke winner will face the winner of the No. 4 Queens-No. 5 Limestone matchup, which will be held at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, in the regional semifinals.
