Two junior golfers from the Augusta area were named Rolex Junior All-Americans by the American Junior Golf Association on Wednesday.
McKenzie Talbert , of North Augusta, was named to the second team, while Cody Shafer , of Evans, earned honorable mention honors.
Talbert, 15, is No. 16 in the Polo Golf Rankings, while Shafer, 17, is ranked 33rd.
- The national champion Augusta State men's team will be honored today during a Hometown Heroes Spirit Night at the Chick-fil-A at Augusta Exchange from 5 to 8 p.m. A portion of the sales will go to First Tee Augusta.
- In Aiken, Pat Brogden , of Garner, N.C., shot 74 to open a seven-stroke lead after two rounds of the Women's Eastern Golf Association Senior Championship at Houndslake Country Club.
Brogden is at 145 entering today's final round. Barbara Pagana , of Selinsgrove, Pa., is second at 79-73--152.
- In Clemmons, N.C., USC Aiken shot a final-round 292 to finish sixth in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Preview on the Tanglewood Championship Course.
The Pacers finished the 54-hole event at 885, 24 shots behind first-place Newberry.
Brian Amick (74-76-71) and Mark Dickson (74-73-74) tied for 18th at 221 to lead USC Aiken.
Newberry's Daniel Stanley (78-67-66) claimed medalist honors at 211. Teammate Ben Lown (75-76-74), a North Augusta native, tied for 32nd at 225.
Aikenite set to race in the Breeders' Cup
Dogwood Stable's Aikenite will run in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6 after equaling a track record in a seven-furlong allowance at Keeneland last week.
Aikenite is the second Dogwood horse who will be entered in a Breeders' Cup race. The other is Atoned , who is scheduled to run in the Breeders' Cup Marathon.
Lady Pacers record shutout vs. Wolves
In Aiken, USC Aiken's women's team blanked Newberry 2-0 on Wednesday.
Madeline Fellabom scored off a penalty kick in the 82nd minute and former South Aiken standout Katie Rumble scored in the 88th minute off an assist from Alex Cohen , a former Greenbrier standout, for the Lady Pacers (4-10-1).
Goalkeepers Alli Edens and Melissa Westphal combined on the shutout, making eight total saves.
- In Aiken, the USC Aiken men lost 1-0 to Francis Marion in a Peach Belt Conference match to fall to 1-10-2 overall and 0-6-1 in the conference.
Duke heavy favorite to capture ACC title
Defending national champion Duke is a near unanimous preseason choice to win the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The Blue Devils earned 61 of a possible 62 first-place votes in ballots cast by media members.
Virginia Tech was picked second, followed by North Carolina, North Carolina State, Florida State, Maryland, Clemson, Miami, Georgia Tech, Boston College, Virginia and Wake Forest.
