Alma mater honors USC Aiken coach

USC Aiken assistant men's basketball coach Brett Longpre was recently welcomed into the Mansfield University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Longpre played basketball for Mansfield University as a four-season starter from 2001 to 2004. He still holds the school record of 301 3-point field goals.

- In Aiken, the USC Aiken women's soccer team tied the University of Montevallo 2-2.

Brittany Moores and Katie Rumble scored goals for the Pacers. The Lady Pacers' record is now 2-8-1. Their next game is in Aiken against Lander at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

- In Aiken, the USC Aiken men's soccer team lost to the Montevallo, 2-0.

USC Aiken drops to 1-7-2, The Pacers play host to Lander at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

New Tampa coach wins in his debut

In Tampa, Fla., Steven Stamkos had two goals and an assist to help new Tampa Bay coach Guy Boucher win his NHL debut in the Lightning's 5-3 victory over Atlanta on Saturday night.

The Thrashers, who trailed 4-0 in the second period, got goals from Tobias Enstrom, Ben Eager and Chris Thorburn .

- Atlanta goalie Ondrej Pavelec has a concussion and remains hospitalized undergoing additional tests.

The team said Saturday that it had called up Drew MacIntyre from its minor-league affiliate in Chicago to fill in for Pavelec, who collapsed just 21/2 minutes into a season-opening win over Washington.

Monfils advances to Japan Open final

In Tokyo, Frenchman Gael Monfils advanced to the Japan Open final, beating the Czech Republic's Radek Stepanek 6-3, 6-3.

The fifth-seeded Monfils will face top-ranked Rafael Nadal or Viktor Troicki today.

Monfils beat second-seeded Andy Roddick to reach the semifinals.

- In Beijing, top-seeded Novak Djokovic reached the China Open final after a 7-6 (1), 6-4 win over American John Isner .

The Serbian will defend his title today against the winner of Saturday's other semifinal between Ivan Ljubicic and David Ferrer .

On the women's side, Vera Zvonareva powered past China's Li Na 6-3, 6-3.

She will play either No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark or Israel's Shahar Peer .

Breeders Crown champ sets record

In Wilkes Barre, Pa., Break The Bank K won the $600,000 Breeders Crown Final for 3-year-old trotters at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs on Saturday.

Driven by Brian Sears , Break The Bank K set a new world record of 1 minute, 52 2-5 seconds for 3-year-old trotting colts on a 5-8 mile track.

Local boxers ousted after the semifinals

In San Antonio, three North Augusta boxers were eliminated in the semifinal round of the National PAL Boxing Championships.

Brandon Dominguez was defeated by a 6-4 decision to George Rincon of Carrollton, Texas.

Hector Valles was defeated by a 20-4 decision to John Herrera of Corpus Christi, Texas.

And Christian Steele lost a 11-10 decision to Terrance Jarman of LeHigh, Fla.

U.S., Poland battle to draw in Chicago

In Chicago, Oguchi Onyewu scored one goal and German-born Jermaine Jones set up another in his United States debut as the Americans settled for a 2-2 draw with Poland in an international friendly on Saturday. Onyewu's header in the 52nd minute made up for a first-half gaffe, which led to Poland's first goal.
