Spartans are no-hit in decisive contest

In Newnan, Ga., behind the combined no-hit pitching of Jack Duffey and Evan Graybill , Heritage School eliminated Edmund Burke, 14-0, in the deciding game of their Georgia Independent School Association Class AA semifinal series.

Duffey, Graybill and Grant Alvarez all homered for the Hawks, who advance to face Tiftarea for the state title.

College Volleyball

California standout joins Lady Jaguars

Karolina Stenlund , a 6-foot middle blocker from Irvine, Calif., has signed to play volleyball at Augusta State.

Stenlund was a two-time first-team all-Pacific Coast Conference standout at Beckman High School.

She is joined in the Augusta State recruiting class by Andria Tagarelli and Mary Beth Ingram , a pair of Florida prep products.

College Football

Irish alum transfers to Georgia Southern

Former Auburn player John Douglas , a junior from Augusta, has transferred to Georgia Southern and enrolled in summer classes.

Douglas, an Aquinas graduate, saw playing time in 11 games for Auburn in 2009. He started the 2008 season opener for the Tigers before suffering an injury that limited his playing time for most of the rest of the season.

- The University of Michigan admitted to a series of violations in its storied football program and insisted the problems related to practice time and the activities of graduate assistants were not enough to warrant major punishment from the NCAA.

Michigan released more than 150 pages detailing its investigation and self-imposed sanctions it hopes will satisfy the NCAA, whose staff will hold a hearing on the case in August.

S.C. State coaches to attend function

The Greater Augusta Alumni Chapter of South Carolina State will hold the "Bulldog Nite Roundup" at Cafe 209 on the River on Thursday.

The function, featuring a meet and greet with football coach Buddy Pough and basketball coach Tim Carter , will begin at 6 p.m.

Gamecock pitcher first-team All-SEC

Senior right-handed pitcher Blake Cooper earned first-team All-Southeastern Conference honors the conference announced Tuesday.

Sophomore outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. and freshman reliever Matt Price were named to the second team.

- Aquinas graduate Andrew Foushee was named the Big South pitcher of the week for his performance Friday in Presbyterian College's win over VMI.

Foushee threw a complete-game four hitter in a 6-0 win. He struck out 10 and retired the final 16 batters he faced. Foushee, a sophomore, graduated from Aquinas in 2008.

U.S. falls to Czechs in exhibition match

In East Hartford, Conn., the Czech Republic exposed the United States' defensive deficiencies time and again, taking advantage of sloppy play in a 4-2 victory in the first of three World Cup warm-up matches for the U.S.

Maurice Edu and Herculez Gomez each got their first international goals for the Americans.

Formula One event set for Texas track

Formula One racing is coming back to the United States in 2012 with a long-term deal to race in Austin, Texas, on a track built specifically for the event.

Officials said Austin would play host to the U.S. Grand Prix until 2021.
