Jags add forward to their 2010-11 roster

Augusta State men's basketball coach Dip Metress announced Monday the fourth signee of the spring recruiting period.

Devon Wright-Nelson , a 6-6, 225-pound forward from Good Counsel High School in Olney, Md., signed a letter of intent to join the Jaguars for the 2010-11 season.

He averaged 11 points and eight rebounds per game and shot 79 percent from the free-throw line as a senior.

Wright-Nelson is the fourth signee in the Jaguars' 2010 recruiting class, joining guards Oneal Armstrong and Kyle Armour and forward Charles Robinson .

- A federal judge has denied a request to move the trial of a woman charged with trying to extort $10 million from University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino .

U.S. District Judge Charles R. Simpson III ruled that Karen Cunagin Sypher couldn't show that pretrial publicity warrants the unusual step of relocating the case from Louisville, Ky.

Fox Creek baseball names Brown coach

Fox Creek announced Monday that former South Aiken assistant Wesley Brown will take over as its baseball coach.

Brown was an assistant coach on a Thoroughbreds team that reached the Class AAA state championship series. He also spent time at Barnwell, Silver Bluff and Midland Valley.

Evans junior wins at Bartram Trail event

Evans' Taylor Gove shot 70-69 to finish at 5-under par and earn a one-shot victory in the boys 18-19 division of the Bartram Trail Junior Class at Bartram Trail Golf Club.

Stephen Hill , of Evans, shot 4-under to win the boys 13-15 division.

Other winners include: Aiken's Jake Carter in the boys 10-12 division; Elizabeth Kim , of Martinez, in the girls 15-19 division; and Eunice Yi , of Evans, in the girls 10-14 division.

Boxing

Augusta's Deloach, Torrance grab gold

In Atlanta, Justin Deloach and Nicholas Torrance , of the Augusta Boxing Club, won gold medals at the Georgia State Junior Olympic Championships on Sunday.

Deloach, who won the 147-pound division, and Torrance, champion of the 125-pound division, advance to the Region 3 Southeastern Junior Olympic Championships on Friday and Saturday at the boxing club.

Other Augusta Boxing Club gold medalists include Desmond Lyons , Doc Robinson , Willie Burns and Eric Leverette .

Only fighters ages 13-16 can qualify for the regionals.

Gamecocks will start Belcher in first game

Former Greenbrier standout Nolan Belcher gets the opening-game assignment over Blake Cooper for South Carolina in the Southeastern Conference tournament.

Coach Ray Tanner said he and pitching coach Mark Calvi had discussed options the past couple of weeks and decided that using Cooper so early might throw him off down the road.

Belcher was in South Carolina's rotation as a freshman last year. However, he's made only one start since March 23.

NCAA denied 'Noles records on cheating

The Florida Supreme Court has rejected the NCAA's appeal of a judge's order to release records on academic cheating at Florida State.

The justices Monday unanimously refused to hear the case.

The ruling follows an October decision that denied the NCAA's emergency motion that sought to block the release of records.

The files were part of a disciplinary case against Florida State that resulted in knocking 12 victories off the record of former football coach Bobby Bowden as part of the school's penalty.
