Horn loses two guards off club

Coach Darrin Horn was bothered by the production from South Carolina's shooting guards this season, and his disappointment became more apparent Tuesday when sophomore guards Ramon Galloway and Stephen Spinella announced they wouldn't return to school.

It was last week when Horn described the efficiency from the No. 2 guard spot "abysmal" and vowed that would change.

"Not knowing what we were going to get from the two guard spot was a challenge," Horn said in wrapping up the season.

Horn will likely have the same questions when practice begins without Galloway and Spinella, two of the team's more experienced players.

The moves likely give highly regarded recruit Damien Leonard a chance to see significant playing time next season. The only other returning guard is starter Brian Richardson, a freshman whose shooting touch faded after starting quickly last fall.

DUKE: Coach Mike Krzyzewski says point guard Kyrie Irving will play "significant minutes" in the West regional semifinal against Arizona.

Krzyzewski said Irving would not start Thursday night in Anaheim, Calif., but is ahead of schedule in his return from a toe injury that cost him most of his freshman season.

Irving missed 31/2 months with an injured right big toe but came off the bench in both of the top-seeded Blue Devils' NCAA Tournament games. He scored 14 points in 20 minutes in his return against Hampton. He had 11 points in 21 minutes against Michigan and was on the court at the end of that win.

COURTS: The woman convicted of trying to extort University of Louisville coach Rick Pitino has lost her latest bid for a new trial.

U.S. District Judge Charles R. Simpson III on Tuesday rejected arguments from Karen Cunagin Sypher, saying there's no new evidence that would warrant granting her second request for a new trial.

In Boulder, Colo., Alec Burks had 25 points and 10 rebounds, helping Colorado (24-13) hold off Kent State (25-12) and advance to the NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden.
