Georgia's Todd Grantham sees defense take step back

Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham got an extension after his unit's strong showing in 2011. However, the Bulldogs have struggled on defense this season.

Geno Smith. The West Virginia quarterback is averaging 399 passing yards a game with an 81 percent completion rate. Smith has thrown 24 touchdowns and no interceptions.

Todd Grantham. After a so-so first season in 2010, the Georgia defensive coordinator bounced back in 2011 and led one of the top squads in the nation. He received a new three-year, $2.48 million deal in the off-season, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Grantham’s 3-4 defense this season, which includes All-Americans in linebacker Jarvis Jones and safety Bacarri Rambo, is ranked 53rd in the nation in scoring and 53rd in total yards allowed.

For the record, South Carolina defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward makes $550,000 and the Gamecocks rank fourth in scoring and 12th in total defense.

1. South Carolina (6-0, 4-0 Southeastern Conference). The Gamecocks are off to a 6-0 start for the third time in school history.

2. Georgia (5-1, 3-1 SEC). Aaron Murray has bigger things on his plate than football games. Pray for the Murray family and his father, Dennis, who is battling thyroid cancer.

3. Clemson (5-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). The Tigers got a huge break with North Carolina State upsetting Florida State.

4. Georgia Tech (2-4, 1-3 ACC). Firing Al Groh was the right move, even if it was a week late.
