South Carolina's Jadeveon Clowney sits out against Kentucky with bruised ribs

South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who has been bothered by injuries all year, did not play Saturday.

COLUMBIA — South Carolina All-American defensive end Jadeveon Clowney did not play in Saturday night’s game against Kentucky.

The school announced during the first quarter that he did not dress out because of bruised ribs. That was a surprise because even though Clowney did not practice Thursday, the team said he was expected to play.

The junior from Rock Hill, S.C., entered this season with plenty of hype as he helped the Gamecocks to consecutive 11-win seasons. But with a nagging foot injury and teams running away from his side of the field, Clowney has posted only 12 tackles in the first four games with two sacks and one forced fumble.

Clowney watched the South Carolina win from the sideline wearing his No. 7 jersey and black shorts. He was replaced in the starting lineup by redshirt freshman Darius English.

The last game Clowney missed was last November against Wofford.

’CAT LOVER: With Saturday night’s victory, Steve Spurrier now owns a 20-1 all-time record against Kentucky. That includes an 8-1 mark at South Carolina.

It’s the most victories Spurrier has against any school. Spurrier also has 19 wins against Vanderbilt, another SEC East foe.

The only blemish Spurrier suffered against the Wildcats came in 2010, when the Gamecocks lost 31-28 in Lexington, Ky.

HISTORIC PACE: South Carolina’s offense piled up 297 yards of offense in the first half against Kentucky, keeping it on track for a record season.

The Gamecocks put up 454 yards at Georgia, 579 against Vanderbilt and 490 in its road win at Central Florida.

Through the first four games, the Gamecocks had 1,929 yards of total offense. That’s the best for the team since such records were kept beginning in 1962.

THIS AND THAT: South Carolina observed a moment of silence for former football coach and athletic director Paul Dietzel, who died Sept. 24 at age 89. Dietzel compiled a record of 42-53-1 from 1966-74. ... The Gamecocks wore pink wrist bands, tape and other trim on their uniforms as part of October’s breast cancer awareness campaign. … The victory extended South Carolina’s home winning streak to 14, which trails only Michigan (18) and Georgia (15) for longest current streak.
