ATLANTA --- Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said his team's first scrimmage Saturday was "a starting place" that included some big plays, but too many penalties and botched plays.
Georgia Tech did not keep official statistics in the scrimmage at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
Quarterback Tevin Washington , the favorite to take the starting job held by Joshua Nesbitt the past three years, completed a 63-yard pass to A-back Roddy Jones . Redshirt freshman Synjyn Days had the only touchdown pass to freshman Jeff Greene .
"It was like a lot of first scrimmages, there were way too many balls on the ground and way too many penalties," Johnson said. "But we hit some big plays. When you play against each other there's positives and negatives on both sides. It's a starting place and we'll look at it and try to make some improvements."
Johnson said Washington and Days threw "pretty well."
CLEMSON: Starting quarterback Tajh Boyd completed 10 of 12 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown to highlight the Tigers' 75-play scrimmage in Memorial Stadium on Saturday morning.
The top rusher was Roderick McDowell , who had four rushes for 68 yards, including a 39-yarder on his first carry of the day.
SOUTH CAROLINA: Quarterback Connor Shaw hit 9 of 11 passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns in the Gamecocks' first official scrimmage of the fall.
Stephen Garcia was the starter at quarterback. He was 9 for 15 for 92 yards.
NOTRE DAME: Police say former Irish defensive coordinator and NFL player Corwin Brown was taken to a hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a nearly seven-hour standoff at his Indiana home.
St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Commander Tim Corbett said Friday night he did not know whether Brown's injuries were life-threatening.
Police say they heard gunshots inside the home when they arrived about 1 p.m. in response to a reported domestic dispute.
