Ex-LSU star Tyrann Mathieu in drug rehab, report says

Former Louisiana State University star Tyrann Mathieu has entered a drug rehabilitation program in Houston since being dismissed last week from the team, his adoptive father told ESPN.com.

Tyrone Mathieu says that the 20-year-old cornerback – nicknamed the “Honey Badger” – has been at the Right Step recovery center and is being counseled by former NBA player John Lucas.

Tyrone Mathieu told ESPN that “there is no timeline” on his son’s return to academics and football, but that it is not accurate to say his son doing either this fall has been eliminated as a possibility.

Tyrone Mathieu said Tyrann and the family need “time to heal” and that football is not a priority.

GEORGIA: Ray Drew came to Athens as a 240-pound outside linebacker.

One year and nearly 50 pounds later, Drew is learning how to live in the cramped confines of the interior as a defensive end in Georgia’s 3-4 scheme.

“It hasn’t been too much of a transition because it’s very similar to what I ran in high school,” Drew said. “The defensive end-outside linebacker position was interchangable as well so I never really lost the feel for having my hand in the dirt and knowing what I’m supposed to do there. So it was a fairly smooth transition.”

Drew was listed at 6-foot-5, 243 pounds when he was a freshman last year. At the end of spring workouts, Drew had grown to 263 pounds. Over the summer he gained even more bulk and could get even bigger.

“Ray weighs 290 pounds now,” Georgia defensive line coach Rodney Garner said. “You can’t play linebacker when you weigh 290 pounds. That’s too big.”

NOTRE DAME: Fans going to see the football team at Soldier Field in Chicago when the Fighting Irish play Miami in October might not recognize the home team.

The Irish will wear a special uniform for the neutral-site home game. The jerseys have metallic numbers that say IRISH on the front. The gold pants have a blue stripe on the left side with a leprechaun on it. The helmet is gold on the top and the right side and blue on the left with a leprechaun.

OKLAHOMA: Defensive tackle Stacy McGee was suspended indefinitely for what coach Bob Stoops called a violation of university rules.

IDAHO: The Idaho State Board of Education has approved letting the Vandals begin scheduling and playing as an independent.

The board’s 5-1 vote Friday also gives school administrators permission to explore membership in the Big Sky Conference for all other Vandal sports teams.

Since 2005, the Vandals have competed in the Western Athletic Conference.
