ATLANTA — Lleyton Hewitt began warming up for the hard courts of the U.S. Open on Tuesday, beating Eduoard Roger-Vasselin 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the Atlanta Open.
Hewitt, who was runner-up two weeks ago on grass in Newport, R.I., was one of three seeded players to finish his match before an evening rain delay.
Yen-Hsun Lu, the No. 5 seed, beat qualifier Kevin King 6-3, 7-5; and eighth seed Evgeny Donskoy beat Rajeev Ram 6-3, 6-4. Sixth-seeded Mardy Fish was leading Mike Russell 6-4, 1-2 when their match was delayed.
BANK OF THE WEST CLASSIC: In Stanford, Calif.,, Daniela Hantuchova beat Yanina Wickmayer 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 in the first round.
The 46th-ranked Hantuchova, once ranked as high as No. 5, played to the full three sets for the 269th time since 2000.
Wickmayer, ranked No. 56, reached the semifinals of last year’s Classic.
In other matches, sixth-seeded Varvana Lepchenko beat qualifier Michelle Larcher de Brito 6-2, 6-4; qualifier Coco Vandeweghe, a finalist last year, downed Monica Niculescu 6-0, 6-3; and qualifier Vera Dushevina topped Marina Erakovic 6-2, 6-1.
SWISS OPEN: In Gstaad, Switzerland, Thomaz Bellucci’s defense of the title ended in the first round when he lost to Federico Delbonis, who beat Roger Federer in Germany last week.
Delbonis won 7-5, 7-6 (2) against Bellucci who also took the clay-court title at Swiss ski resort Gstaad in 2009.
Delbonis will continue rising in the rankings after victory over Federer in the Hamburg semifinals helped him climb from No. 114 to 65.
Federer is top-seeded this week and has a second-round match scheduled on Thursday, against Daniel Brands, who took a set off him in the second round at Hamburg.
Brands advanced from the first round Tuesday by beating Marco Chiudinelli, Federer’s Swiss childhood friend, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Eighth-seeded Roberto Bautista eased past Henri Laaksonen, 6-2, 6-3; Daniel Gimeno-Traver beat Kenny De Schepper, 6-4, 6-4; Guillermo Garcia-Lopez beat Adrian Ungur, 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-1; and Pablo Andujar eliminated Victor Crivoi, 6-1, 6-2.
Victor Hanescu beat qualifier Dustin Brown 7-6 (6), 6-2.
Robin Haase beat Joao Souza 6-4, 7-6 (7), and will next face third-seeded Janko Tipsarevic.
