Records fall in CSRA Swim League All-Star Meet

The atmosphere was one of excitement at the Augusta Aquatics Center on Monday night.

Not just because it was the final meet of the CSRA Swim League season but also because it pitted the best area swimmers against each other.

The league’s five division meets began Friday and once they were finished Sunday, the league’s 20 best in each event took to the pool once more at the CSRA All-Star Meet.

Hammond Hill’s Emily Sam was one of 12 double winners on the night and broke the first meet record of the night, finishing the girls 13-14 50-yard breaststroke in 32.48 seconds, breaking Greenbrier High School alum Lauren Plowman’s record of 32.50 which had stood for eight years.

“I really wanted to go for it and break it because it’s from 2005,” said Sam. “I felt like I was kind of close, I was hoping I would beat it.”

She didn’t set a record in her 100 individual medley win, but she wasn’t surprised by that.

“The record was set by Katherine Huff and I’d have to drop five seconds,” Sam said.

Springlakes’ Rachel Fulton (15.88) broke her own record in the girls 9-10 25-yard backstroke; her previous mark of 15.94 was set earlier this season.

Petersburg Racquet Club swimmer Carson Crowley, a recent Lakeside graduate, has been swimming in the league since she was 5 years old. She finished first in the 50-yard breaststroke and second in the 50-yard freestyle.

She says she will miss everything about the league, especially getting to swim with her two younger brothers. She likes the All-Star meet because it brings all the swimmers together.

“It’s a great chance for kids in different divisions to get together and have a good time,” Crowley said.

Division 5 Woodbridge head coach Ross Meschke noted what an accomplishment it is for swimmers to qualify for the meet.

“I’m real proud of them,” Meschke said of his swimmers. “When you’re in a lower division and make the top 20 of the CSRA, that’s big. I tell them every year, you make it to the All-Stars and that’s it.”
