GreenJackets back in groove
In Rome, Ga., Augusta’s bats came back to life as the GreenJackets banged out 13 hits in a 7-4 victory over the Rome Braves on Tuesday.
Augusta was limited to two hits in a 6-0 loss to Rome on Monday.
Andrew Cain and Jesus Galindo had three hits each for Augusta. Joseph Rapp had two hits and two RBI.
Augusta (25-19) had four extra-base hits. Trevor Brown had a triple and Cain, Galindo and Shayne Houck had doubles.
Pacers move up to fourth place
In Hershey, Pa., USC Aiken shaved six shots off its first-round score and moved up six spots after Day 2 of the NCAA Division II Men’s Championship.
Behind Matt Atkins and Hayden Letien, the Pacers shot 8-over-par 292 on Tuesday at Hershey Country Club.
USC Aiken, which was 10th after the opening rounds, is now in fourth place.
Atkins had 2-under-par 69 and Letien shot 71. The other counters were Taylor Welborn and Mark Dickson, who both had 76. J.P. Solis’ 80 was thrown out since each team counted the low four scores.
Atkins, who opened with 70, is second in the individual race, one shot behind CSU-Stanislaus’ Rob Damschen (70-68).
Barry is the team leader at 4-over 572 for 36 holes. USC Aiken is at 590.
• Southern Polytechnic State University soccer player Gabe Warner has been named the male Honor Student-Athlete of the Year.
The former Grovetown player started all 22 games for Southern Poly, which reached the Elite Eight of the NAIA national tournament and ended the season ranked No. 8 nationally.
Warner spearheaded a defense that allowed 18 goals all season. He scored one goal and three assists for five points.
He had a 3.62 cumulative grade-point average through the fall 2012 semester as a biology major.
Camellia Classic has date change
The date for the Camellia Classic at Belle Meade Country Club in Thomson has been changed.
The Regions Bank Amateur Series event, scheduled for June 1-2, will now be played Aug. 31-Sept. 1.
The change was made because the course is re-working its greens.
That means the next Regions event will be the North Augusta Exchange Club/Persimmon Hill Classic on June 15-16. It will be the third of 10 events this season.
Murray pulls out of French Open
Andy Murray has withdrawn from the French Open after seeking medical advice on his back injury.
The second-ranked Briton was forced to pull out of the Italian Open during his second-round match against Marcel Granollers of Spain last Wednesday because of a lower back complaint.
The U.S. Open champion met with specialists this week and has opted to now focus on preparing for the start of the grass-court season and Wimbledon next month.
Lions expect to run a bowl game
The Detroit Lions are expected to create and operate a new bowl game at Ford Field starting in 2014, which would eliminate the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl after this season, sources said Tuesday.
