Jackets, Drive split a twin bill

In Greenville, S.C., the Augusta GreenJackets split a doubleheader with the Greenville Drive on Wednesday night as Devin Harris continued his strong play.

Augusta won the opener 6-1, thanks to a five-run third inning that included a two-run homer by Garrett Buechele and a two-run triple by Harris, who hit a game-winning homer in Tuesday’s game.

Augusta starter Kyle Crick gave up the lone run in 5⅔ innings pitched.

Greenville took the nightcap 5-2 in dramatic fashion. Blake Swihart connected on a three-run, walk-off homer in the seventh off Christopher Marlowe.

Harris had a RBI double for the GreenJackets in the sixth inning.



Ex-Laney star to play in Americus

DeKoya Mack, who finished her senior girls basketball season at Laney this past school year, has signed with South Georgia Technical College in Americus.

Mack helped the Lady Wildcats reach the state semifinals four years in a row.



Bulldog Club to honor former QB

The Greater Augusta Bulldog Club will hold its season kickoff meeting tonight at Julian Smith Casino.

It will feature a tribute to former Bulldogs quarterback David Greene and special guest Loran Smith.

The dinner and reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. The program will start at 6.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under.

They are available at Rick’s Paint and Body, Somewhere In Augusta, Tudor’s Cleaners, Queens­borough Bank locations, Surrey Center Pharmacy or from Bulldog board members.

• The Aiken County Gamecock Club will hold a kickoff party tonight at the Aiken County Shrine Club.

The event will run from 6-9 p.m. and will feature “Cocky,” the Gamecocks mascot, and the team’s cheerleaders. Admission is free.



First Tee event set for Saturday

The First Tee of Aiken at Houndslake Country Club will hold its Open House, Demo Day and Back to School Golf Skills Challenge on Saturday.

There is no admission charge for the event, which will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., but donations will be accepted.

Golfers can try out the latest equipment from vendors such as Titleist, Taylor Made, and Callaway.

Also, complimentary mini-lessons will be given from local golf pros. Reservations are recommended. Call (803) 226-0053 to sign up.



Aiken Cup slated for this weekend

The GA-SC Bulls Soccer Club will play host to the 17th annual Aiken Soccer Cup on Saturday and Sunday at the Aiken polo fields.

More than 125 teams from Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, ranging in age from U9 to U19, will participate.



Peters cruises to Trucks victory

In Bristol, Va., Timothy Peters won the NASCAR Trucks Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway, leading all 204 laps for his second victory of the season and fifth overall. Parker Kligerman finished second.
