USC Aiken posts 6th-place finish

In Hilton Head Island, S.C., USC Aiken opened up its spring season with a sixth place finish in the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate.

The Pacers closed with 14-over 302 in the 54-hole event.

JP Solis had a top-10 finish for the Pacers, who were the only NCAA Division II team in the field (the rest were NCAA Division I schools).

Solis shot 75-76-72 to finish in a tie for ninth place.

On Tuesday, the Pacers counted the 72 by Solis, 76’s by Matt Atkins and Mark Dickson and 78 by Brian Amick. Andrew Ward’s 79 was the non-counting score.

Overall, Atkins tied for 12th, Dickson tied for 44th, Ward tied for 52nd and Amick tied for 77th.

Augusta’s William Sigg, a sophomore, led Presbyterian to a fifth-place finish.

Sigg, a former Richmond Academy golfer, tied for third place after rounds of 76-72-73. It was his first top-10 as a collegian.

Georgia State won the team title by six shots over Furman.

• Augusta State’s men have added another tournament to their spring schedule.

The Jaguars will play in next week’s Charleston Shootout at The Links at Stono Ferry.

The two-day, 54-hole event begins with 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.

The field includes host College of Charleston, Charleston Southern, Florida, High Point, Radford, Gardner Webb, Presbyterian, Navy, Western Kentucky, Stetson, USC Upstate and Stephen F. Austin.



Ex-Evans player dies in car crash

Former Evans High School baseball and basketball player Chance Smith died in a single-car accident early Sunday morning.

The 2003 graduate was celebrating his upcoming 27th birthday with his wife, La-aia, in Atlanta and was on his way home when the crash occurred.

Smith worked as an Army contractor and was scheduled to return to Afghanistan shortly.

La-aia suffered a cracked sternum and deflated lung.

Their 3-month-old daughter, Laina Madison, was not with them.

After graduating from Evans, Smith played baseball for the Citadel from 2004-2007.

“He was a great kid, fantastic, all yes sir-no sir,” said Evans basketball coach Kevin Kenny, who coached Smith.

A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday,

Both will be at the Haisten Funeral Home in McDonough, Ga.

Lady Pacers are now ranked 10th

The USC Aiken women’s team has cracked the top 10 in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll.

The Pacers’ (21-3, 14-2 Peach Belt Conference) are ranked 10th this week.

USC Aiken’s highest-ever ranking was seventh in the Dec. 2, 2008 poll.



Davydenko wins match over Beck

In Marseille, France, Nikolay Davydenko had nine aces and didn’t face a break point in a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Andreas Beck to reach the second round of the Open 13.

Davydenko will face fourth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro for a place in the quarterfinals.
