Pens’ Crosby set to return tonight

Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby will make his season debut tonight against the New York Islanders, his first game in nearly a year since being sidelined with concussion-like symptoms.

Crosby hasn’t played since taking head shots in consecutive games in January against Washington and Tampa Bay.

The 2007 NHL MVP spent the past 10 months undergoing a painstakingly thorough rehabilitation that left him wondering when he’d play again and forced the league to take a harsher stance when it comes to policing head hits.

• In Anaheim, Calif., Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen and Brad Stuart staked Detroit to a three-goal lead, and the Red Wings held on for a 4-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks.

• In Raleigh, N.C., Jeff Skinner had a goal and an assist, and Jay Harrison and Jussi Jokinen also scored to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

• In Denver, Patrick Marleau had a hat trick, Thomas Greiss stopped 35 shots and the San Jose Sharks beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-1.

The Philadelphia Phillies acquired utilityman Ty Wigginton and cash from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for a player to be named later or cash.

Wigginton batted .242 with 15 homers and 47 RBI in 130 games last season. He played third base, first base, left field and right field. The deal was announced Sunday night.

• The Cleveland Indians are working on a deal to bring back former All-Star center fielder Grady Sizemore.

In October, the Indians declined a $9 million club option on Sizemore for next season, making him a free agent.
