Jackets drop series opener to Legends

In Lexington, Ky., Michael Kvasnicka had three hits and two RBI to lead the Lexington Legends to a 5-4 win over the Augusta GreenJackets on Sunday in the opener of a three-game series.

Daniel Adamson chipped in with two RBI for the Legends.

Devin Harris and Adam Duvall had home runs for the GreenJackets.

Ace leads Clemson past Georgia Tech

In Clemson, S.C., Justin Sarratt allowed one run on three hits in 8q innings to lead Clemson to a 3-1 victory over Georgia Tech.

Sarratt had six strikeouts and walked two.

Phil Pohl homered for the Tigers (29-15, 13-11 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Buck Farmer gave up three runs in eight innings for the Yellow Jackets (31-14, 18-6).

- In Athens, Ga., with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Georgia's Zach Cone was hit by a pitch, forcing home Peter Verdin and capping off a three-run rally that lifted the Bulldogs to a 6-5 win over Arkansas (29-13, 10-11 Southeastern Conference).

Verdin, Cone and Levi Hyams each finished with two RBI for Georgia (24-21, 13-8).

- In Columbia, Peter Mooney and Brady Thomas had two RBI apiece in leading South Carolina to a 7-3 win over Auburn (23-21, 9-12 SEC).

Adrian Morales had three hits and an RBI for the Gamecocks (35-8, 17-4).


Djokovic captures Serbia Open crown

In Belgrade, Serbia, Novak Djokovic defeated Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (4), 6-2 on Sunday to win the Serbia Open for his fifth title and 27th consecutive victory this season.

The Australian Open champion was not always at his best in a match often played in rain and had six double faults.

- In Oeiras, Portugal, Juan Martin del Potro beat Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 6-2 in the final of the Estoril Open, winning his first clay-court event of the year.

- In Madrid, Caroline Wozniacki easily advanced to the second round of the Madrid Open, while Maria Sharapova had to rally to beat Arantxa Rus 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Arantxa Parra Santonja ousted former top-10 player Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 7-5.

Third-seeded Francesca Schia-vone of Italy beat Shuai Peng of China 7-5, 7-6 (2).

Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova eliminated Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan 6-3, 6-3.


Canada hammers France in worlds

In Kosice, Slovakia, Olympic champion Canada got two goals from Jeff Skinner to rout France 9-1 Sunday and advance to the second round of the ice hockey world championship.

Marc-Andre Gragnani , Jason Spezza and Skinner scored to give Canada a 3-0 lead at the 12:02 mark.

France replied through Pierre Edouard Bellemare , who scored midway through the second period on a power play, before Chris Stewart and Alex Pietrangelo netted within 43 seconds for Canada to hold a 5-1 lead.

Bret Burns , Rick Nash , Skinner and Travis Zajac finished the rout with third-period goals.

Russia rebounded from Friday's opening-day loss to Germany by beating Slovenia 6-4.


Former heavyweight fighter Cooper dies

Former heavyweight boxer Henry Cooper , one of Britain's most popular sportsmen who was best known for knocking down Muhammad Ali while he was still known as Cassius Clay, died Sunday. He was 76.

The first boxer to be knighted and receive the title "Sir" from a British monarch, Cooper died just two days before his 77th birthday, the British Boxing Board of Control said. He died at his son's house in Oxted, Surrey, in southern England, after an extended illness.

Cooper floored Ali in a 1963 fight at Wembley Stadium.
