USC Aiken ninth at Southeast Preview

In Clemmons, N.C., USC Aiken's Brian Amick and Mark Dickson shot 4-over-par 74s and are tied for 18th place individually after the first round at the Will Wilson Southeast Regional Preview at the Tanglewood Park Golf Club Championship Course.

USC Aiken totaled 301 and is in ninth place, 11 shots behind UNC Pembroke.

Rutgers player left paralyzed after hit

Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand, who was injured making a tackle on a kickoff return, sustained a horrific neck injury that has left him paralyzed below the neck.

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano says LeGrand is resting in the intensive care unit at Hackensack University Medical Center and will remain there for the near future.

- Minnesota fired coach Tim Brewster , one day after the Golden Gophers lost to Purdue to fall to 1-6 in Brewster's fourth season.

- Auburn safety Aairon Savage is set to have leg surgery.

Coach Gene Chizik says the sixth-year senior will have surgery on Monday and "be out for a while" for the fifth-ranked Tigers. He didn't specify the nature of Savage's injury or the time frame.

- Mississippi starting right guard Logan Clair will miss five to six weeks because of a chipped bone in his ankle suffered during Saturday's loss to No. 8 Alabama.


Perry, Hiller power Ducks past Coyotes

In Anaheim, Calif., Corey Perry deflected Ryan Getzlaf 's centering feed past Jason LaBarbera with 5:37 left, and Jonas Hiller made 36 saves in the Anaheim Ducks' 3-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.

Cam Fowler and Toni Lydman also scored, Perry added an assist, and Bobby Ryan had three assists to help the Ducks improve to 2-3-1.


Murray tops Federer in final at Shanghai

In Shanghai, Andy Murray defeated an error-prone Roger Federer 6-3, 6-2 to win the Shanghai Masters for his second title of the year.

Murray broke the Swiss player's serve four times while fighting off six break points. He also served six aces, while Federer had three.

- In Linz, Austria, Ana Ivanovic routed Patty Schnyder 6-1, 6-2 in the final of the Generali Ladies to win her first WTA Tour title in two years and ninth overall.

- In Osaka, Japan, Tamarine Tanasugarn beat Kimiko Date Krumm 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-1 in the Japan Women's Open final.


Bristol president Byrd dies at age 60

Jeff Byrd , the longtime president and general manager of Bristol Motor Speedway, has died. He was 60.

The speedway says Byrd died Sunday following a lengthy illness.

Byrd had run the iconic Tennessee race track since Speedway Motorsports Inc. bought the facility in 1996. The track became one of the most popular in NASCAR under his leadership.
