Jags freshman gets conference award

Augusta State volleyball player Lisa Bartsch earned Peach Belt Conference Specialist Of The Week honors.

The freshman setter had a career-high 63 assists in a five-set win over Catawba on Oct. 2. It was the most in any match in the conference this year.

- In Thomasville, Ga., Evans' Walker Bottomley won the male 12- to 13-year-old division of the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour's Glen Arven Junior Classic. He shot 82-81--163 to win by four strokes at Glen Arven Country Club.


Bryant plays little in loss to Timberwolves

The London crowd came to see Kobe Bryant and his champion teammates. What they got was Michael Beasley and a surprise showing from the new-look Minnesota Timberwolves.

Beasley scored 21 points -- including eight in a row to help break open the game at the start of the second half -- and Minnesota beat the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers 111-92 on Monday night in their preseason opener.

Bryant went scoreless on 0-for-3 shooting in a little more than six minutes of playing time.

- The Chicago Bulls confirmed that fourth-year center Joakim Noah has agreed to a multiyear contract extension. The team did not disclose terms.


Reutimann receives Waltrip's support

Team owner Michael Waltrip defended driver David Reutimann on Monday for intentionally wrecking championship contender Kyle Busch.

Reutimann was spun by Busch early in Sunday's race in contact for which Busch took responsibility but called accidental. Later, when Busch was running seventh, Reutimann seemed to retaliate by intentionally slamming his car into Busch's door.

Waltrip said Reutimann's "record of sportsmanship is flawless" and that Reutimann deserves respect even though he's not racing for the Sprint Cup title.

Summit discusses lowering baskets

Lower baskets, new uniforms and a new start date for the world championship were just a few ideas discussed at the first women's basketball summit.

"There were a lot of topics covered," said former USA Basketball president Val Ackerman , who helped spearhead the conference. "There was talk about lowering the rims. The notion is that no one in women's basketball has experimented in a serious way. It's something that might enhance the game, leading to dunking, fewer missed shots."


Fedotenko, Rangers reach one-year deal

Free-agent forward Ruslan Fedotenko agreed to a one-year, $1 million contract with the New York Rangers on Monday. He played in Pittsburgh last season, his ninth in the NHL. He had 11 goals and 30 points in 80 games.

- Canadiens forward Michael Cammalleri was suspended for the season opener for slashing the ankle of Islanders' Nino Niederreiter during an exhibition game.
