Augusta's streak is halted by Savannah

In Savannah, Ga., Sand Gnats starter Taylor Whitenton pitched seven shutout innings to outduel Andrew Reichard and lead Savannah to a 3-0 victory Thursday, snapping Augusta's seven-game winning streak.

Whitenton (8-6) allowed three hits and struck out six.

Reichard (3-1) allowed only one earned run in 7Q innings, with no walks and five strikeouts.

Lady Pacers release upcoming schedule

USC Aiken's women's team unveiled its 2010-11 schedule on Thursday.

The Lady Pacers play an exhibition game on Nov. 3 at Kennesaw State. The regular season begins on Nov. 13 against Carson-Newman in the South Atlantic Conference/Peach Belt Conference Challenge in Greenwood, S.C.

USC Aiken plays Augusta State in Augusta on Jan. 24 and then at home on Feb. 2.


Lochte wins gold in 400-meter medley

In Irvine, Calif., Ryan Lochte flirted with the world record in the 400-meter individual medley before settling for a gold medal and the year's fastest time at the Pan Pacific championships on Thursday night.

The American led all the way and touched in 4 minutes, 7.59 seconds.

Michael Phelps turned in the fourth-fastest qualifying time, but he didn't make the final because Lochte and Tyler Clary were faster. Only two swimmers per country are allowed in the finals at Pan Pacs, the year's biggest international meet.

American sets mark in the 400 for 2010

In Zurich, Jeremy Wariner , of the United States, ran the world's fastest 400 meters this year at the Weltklasse Diamond League meeting on Thursday, while Tyson Gay helped the Americans set a meet record in the 400-meter relay.

Wariner finished in 44.13 seconds to take 0.27 off the season's best time, set by Jamaica's Jermaine Gonzales at the Monaco Diamond League meet in July.

Gay, Trell Kimmons , Wallace Spearmon and anchor Michael Rodgers finished the 400-meter in 37.45 seconds


Blazers' Fernandez fined for comments

The NBA fined Trail Blazers swingman Rudy Fernandez $25,000 for public statements that are "detrimental" to the league.

The fine was imposed a day after Fernandez's agent said the Spaniard he did not want to return to the Blazers this season.

Agent Andy Miller told several media outlets that Fernandez wants to play in Europe and is willing to sit out for the next two seasons, the time left on his contract with the Blazers.

- Point guard Earl Boykins signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Auto Racing

Promoter suspended after fatal accident

The Bureau of Land Management suspended future event permits for the promoter of last weekend's off-road race in the California desert where eight spectators were killed by a racing truck.

The federal agency said Thursday the suspension of any MDR Productions permits will remain in effect while an investigation of the accident is under way.

The spectators were killed Saturday night during the California 200 off-road race in the Mojave Desert northeast of Los Angeles.

Ten other spectators were injured.


Defenseman Meyer signs with Atlanta

Defenseman Freddy Meyer , who appeared in 64 games with the New York Islanders last season, signed with the Atlanta Thrashers.
