RiverDogs light up Jackets' pitchers
In Charleston, S.C., the Charleston RiverDogs pounded out 22 hits in a 15-6 victory over Augusta on Wednesday, knocking the GreenJackets out of a first-place tie with Savannah in the Southern Division of the South Atlantic League.
GreenJackets starter Kyle Vazquez allowed eight hits and seven earned runs, lasting just 2 1/3 innings.
Jaguars' Norlander wins opening match
In Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland, Augusta State golfer Henrik Norlander defeated Clement Sordet, of France, 5 and 3, to win his opening match in the British Amateur Championship at Muirfield.
Norlander, of Sweden, advances to play Bolivia's Sebastian MacLean in the round of 32 this morning. The winner of their match will advance to play in the round of 16 in the afternoon.
The British Amateur winner is expected to receive an invitation to play in the 2011 Masters Tournament.
- In Columbus, Ga., Augusta State's Taylor Floyd shot 5-under 66 and is tied for second at the 72-hole Southeastern Amateur.
Floyd's Jaguar teammate Carter Newman shot 69 at the Country Club of Columbus and is tied for eighth with Dykes Harbin , of Augusta, and six others.
Augusta's Lee Knox shot 70 and is tied for 17th.
Augusta State coach Josh Gregory shot 72 and is tied for 34th with the Jaguars' Mitch Krywulycz , the 2008 champion at this event, former PGA Tour member John Engler and Chase Parker .
Augusta State's Jacob Carlsson shot 73 and is tied for 52nd.
- In McDonough, Ga., Dave Womack , an amateur from McDonough, won the Yamaha Atlanta Open at Canongate at Georgia National by a stroke.
Womack shot 67-66--133.
Tommy Brannen , the head pro at Augusta Country Club, shot 74-72--146 and finished tied for 36th.
Gary Cressend , an assistant pro at Augusta Country Club, shot 72-75--147 and finished tied for 46th.
- Augusta's Emmett Turner shot 8-under-par 63 to share the first-round lead in the eGolf Tour's Bolle Classic.
Cameron Yancey also had 63 at the tournament, which is being played at Country Club of Salisbury (N.C.) and Spona Country Club in Lexington, N.C.
Other area players in the field include Matt Hendrix (66), Ryan Dillon (66), Scott Parel (69), David Robinson (69), Scott Usher (69), Cortland Lowe (70) and Michael Green (70).
- Russell Sabol, of Martinez, shot 72-75 to take third place in the boys 13-14 division of the Georgia Junior Golf Tour's event at Georgia Veterans Memorial Course.
Megan Sabol (80-84) placed third in the girls 12-13 division and Appling's Stephanie Bennett (83-86) took third in the girls 16-18 division.
State championship to be held Saturday
The Georgia Road Cycling Championships will be held Saturday at Fort Gordon on the 15-mile Range Road circuit.
The competition will recognize the top pro/am men, women, masters and intermediate racers, beginning at 9 a.m. with the featured 90-mile pro/am men's race.
