Hubbard has big night for Pacers

In Aiken, Maurice Hubbard had a double-
double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead USC Aiken past Allen 79-56 on Thursday night at the convocation center.

Hubbard, who hit five of his six shots from the field, also had two blocks and two steals.

Sterling Council had a team-high 17 points for the Pacers (3-1) and Chase Holmes added 16.

• In Aiken, Kayla Harris scored a career-high 25 points as the USC Aiken women routed Limestone 92-68 in a non-conference game.

Hannah DeGraffinreed added 19 points and six rebounds for the No. 21 Pacers, who are now 5-1.



Claxton solo 1st in Q-School now

In LaQuinta, Calif., three area players remain in the top 10 after two rounds of the six-round PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament.

Swainsboro, Ga., native Will Claxton, who was tied for the lead after Day 1, is now the solo leader. He’s shot 64-70.

Evans resident Vaughn Taylor (65-72) is tied for third place and Aiken resident Kevin Kisner (67-71) is tied for 10th place.

Augusta resident Scott Parel is tied for 57th place after rounds of 71-72.

And Aiken native Matt Hendrix, who opened with 68, had 76 on Thursday and is tied for 81st.

All five of the local players in the tournament played the TPC Stadium Course on Thursday.

The top 25 finishers and ties earn their PGA Tour cards for the 2012 season.

Jackets’ Hutto to join Patriots

North Augusta’s pitcher Trevor Hutto has signed a national letter-of-intent to play for Francis Marion Patriots of the Peach Belt Conference.

Hutto, who is a senior at North Augusta High, was 4-2 with a 3.66 ERA and 36 strikeouts last season. At the plate, he hit .408.

Penske extends Keselowski pact

Brad Keselowski was rewarded for a breakthrough season at NASCAR’s top level with a contract extension from Penske Racing for both the driver and his crew chief.

The team said Thursday the extensions for Keselowski and crew chief Paul Wolfe were for multiple years, although the specific length and financial terms were not disclosed.



U.S. team opens vs. Venezuela

The U.S. soccer team will start its 2012 schedule with an exhibition against Venezuela at Glendale, Ariz., on Jan. 21, then play at Panama four days later.

The games announced Thursday are not on FIFA fixture dates, meaning the U.S. will field players from Major League Soccer and Scandinavian clubs on winter break.



Bogomolov will play for Russia

Alex Bogomolov Jr. will play for Russia instead of the United States after the International Tennis Federation approved the switch Thursday.

Bogomolov, born in Moscow, has represented the U.S. since turning professional in 2002 but has never played at senior level in the Davis Cup.

He is listed by the ATP as Russia’s top-ranked player at No. 34.

Among Americans, he is ranked No. 4.
