More than $1 million worth of racing cars and equipment that belonged to late Aiken businessman Dale Phelon was sold Tuesday at auction.
More than 500 lots went up for bid at Phelon Motorsports in Aiken, including 27 cars and three motorcycles.
A 1969 Lola Can-Am Series car originally owned by Roger Penske and driven by Mark Donohue was sold for $175,000. Phelon purchased the car in 1994 and installed a 486-cubic-inch Chevrolet big block engine that puts out 850 horsepower.
Other big-ticket items sold Tuesday were a 2010 Audi R8 for $112,000 and a 1995 Roush Ford Mustang for $100,000. Ten vehicles sold for more than $50,000 at the auction, which was conducted by Iron Horse Auction Co., of Rockingham, N.C.
Phelon died in March after a brief battle with brain cancer.
