Horned Frogs rally to win Poinsettia Bowl

SAN DIEGO — Casey Pachall highlighted a record-setting game with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Skye Dawson with 4:26 left to lift No. 16 Texas Christian University to a 31-24 victory against Louisiana Tech in the Poinsettia Bowl on Wednesday night.


It was the eighth consecutive victory for Mountain West Conference champion TCU (11-2), which moves to the Big 12 next year. It was the third time this season TCU overcame a fourth-quarter deficit to win.

Pachall was 15 of 29 for 206 yards. He set school single-season records with 228 completions and 2,921 yards, breaking marks set by Andy Dalton.

Western Athletic Conference champion Louisiana Tech (8-5) had its seven-game winning streak snapped hours after coach Sonny Dykes agreed to a contract extension through 2017.

TCU tied the game at 24 on Luke Shivers’ 1-yard run with 7:49 left that capped an 18-play, 72-yard drive that consumed 9 minutes, 21 seconds.


OHIO STATE: North Caro­lina interim coach Everett Withers is heading to Ohio State to become Urban Meyer’s co-defensive coordinator and assistant head coach.

Withers will coach the Tar Heels through their Independence Bowl against Missouri on Dec. 26.


NORTH CAROLINA: Receiver Dwight Jones has been reinstated and will play in the Independence Bowl.

The move came one day after the school declared Jones ineligible and applied to the NCAA for reinstatement following a secondary violation in which the senior allowed his name and photo to be used on a flier promoting a New Year’s Eve party at a club in his hometown of Burlington.


NEBRASKA: Center Mike Caputo will be charged with reckless driving rather than drunken driving in connection with his Dec. 11 arrest in Lincoln, Neb.

Nebraska coach Bo Pelini still has not said whether Caputo will play in the Capital One Bowl against No. 10 South Carolina on Jan. 2.


TEXAS A&M: Offensive line coach Jim Turner has left to take the same job at Texas Tech.


HOUSTON: A person with knowledge of the decision says Tony Levine will be named Houston’s full-time coach today.

The Houston Chronicle and KRIV-TV first reported the story.

Houston is looking to replace Kevin Sumlin, who accepted an offer to coach Texas A&M. Levine, 39, was Sumlin’s assistant head coach and special teams coordinator.


KENTUCKY: Coach Joker Phillips says QB Morgan Newton will miss spring practice after having surgery on his right shoulder.

Newton started the first eight games before freshman Maxwell Smith took over for three before also hurting his right shoulder.


PATERNO UPDATE: About two dozen fans gathered briefly outside Joe Paterno’s home Wednesday night to wish the former Penn State coach a happy 85th birthday and sing a Christmas carol.

Paterno’s son, quarterback coach Jay Paterno, thanked the crowd on behalf of his father. He said that because of chemotherapy Paterno was a little weak so he couldn’t come outside.

Joe Paterno has been diagnosed with what his family has called a treatable form of lung cancer.


HAWAII BOWL: Will feature a team from the Mountain West Conference in 2012 and 2013. The move comes as Hawaii moves from the Western Athletic Conference to the Mountain West starting next season.

Under the agreement, a team from the Mountain West will face a team from Conference USA.

which has been associated with the Hawaii Bowl since its inception in 2002.
