Gehring carries Augusta to win

In Biloxi, Miss., Jim Gehring scored four goals – including two in the decisive third period – as the Augusta RiverHawks stopped the Mississippi Surge 5-2 on Saturday night.

The front-running RiverHawks scored three times in the third period to break open a tight SPHL game. Chris Doyle had the other Augusta goal in the final period.

BJ O’Brien had 26 saves for the RiverHawks, who won for the 14th time.

Lions top Lane behind Jordan

In Aiken, Mario Jordan scored 18 points and handed out six assists to lead Paine College to a 78-56 victory over Lane in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at the USC Aiken Convocation Center.

Kedric Taylor added 13 for the Lions (2-1, 2-0 SIAC).

• In Aiken, the Paine women won their first game of the year, turning back Lane 62-48 in SIAC play.

Ariel Brown had 13 points to lead the Lady Lions (1-3, 1-1 SIAC).

• In Salisbury, N.C., No. 23 USC Aiken topped No. 29 Barton 68-62 on the final day of the Comfort Suites Classic. The Lady Pacers won their opener in the doubleheader tournament, over host Catawba, on Friday.

The Lady Pacers (4-1), who have won three in a row, were led by Kayla Harris and Hannah DeGraffinreed in Saturday’s victory.

Harris had 19 points and seven rebounds.

DeGraffinreed, who was a perfect 7 of 7 from the field, had 15 points.

• In Ettrick, Va., Augusta State’s women went cold at the end of the game and lost 44-41 to host Virginia State in the Chick-fil-A Classic.

Augusta State was held to one point in the final 3:01 and dropped to 1-3. Becky Newhouse led the Lady Jaguars with nine points.

The difference in the game came at the free-throw line, where Virginia State hit 15 of 18 shots and Augusta State was 7 for 13.



Peterson won’t play vs. Falcons

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has been ruled out of today’s game against Atlanta because of a sprained left ankle.

The Vikings announced Saturday that Peterson had been downgraded on the injury report from doubtful to out and would not travel with the team to Atlanta for the game. This will be only the fourth game in Peterson’s five-year NFL career that he will miss.

Toby Gerhart will be the featured runner in Peterson’s place.

• Carolina Panther Jeremy Shockey is listed as probable for today’s game in Indianapolis.

The tight end missed last week’s game with injured ribs but has been a full participant in practice all week and is expected to play Sunday.



Six Togo players die in bus crash

In Togo, the government says at least six topflight players have been killed and another 28 people are critically injured after a bus carrying players and officials from the Etoile Filante club plunged into a ravine and caught fire near the city of Atakpame.

Japan’s Hanyu, Asada win titles

In Moscow, Japanese skaters Yuzuru Hanyu and Mao Asada overcame errors in their free skates to win Rostelecom Cup titles and qualify for next month’s ISU Grand Prix final.
