Ex-Patriot Aaron Hernandez indicted on murder charge



Former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez was indicted Thursday on first-degree murder and weapons charges in the death of a friend whose bullet-riddled body was found in an industrial park about a mile from the ex-player’s home.

The six-count grand jury indictment charges Hernandez with killing 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, a semi-professional football player from Boston who was dating the sister of Hernandez’s girlfriend.


BUCCANEERS: Guard Carl Nicks and kicker Lawrence Tynes are being treated for MRSA infections.

Nicks has an infected blister on the side of his left foot and Tynes has an infected toe on his right foot. MRSA is a staph infection that is resistant to some antibiotics.


HGH TESTING: The top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee says the league’s players’ union “is now holding HGH testing hostage” and that could “force Congress to intervene.” Rep. Elijah Cummings, of Maryland, said in a statement on Thursday that the “NFL Players’ Association continues to disregard its promise to implement HGH testing.”


FALCONS: Steven Jackson is even more excited about the potential of the team’s offense now that tight end Tony Gonzalez is back at practice.

“Now we have Tony back, we haven’t been together as a full team, for a whole offense, for a whole game,” Jackson said on Thursday.


In Detroit, Mich., Reggie Bush wasn’t a factor at all in the running game for the Detroit Lions on Thursday night.

But he was more than OK as a receiver. Bush, the multi-purpose back brought in to provide a spark for Detroit this season, ran for a single yard on six carries, but he had five catches for 103 yards in a 40-9 victory over New England.



In Baltimore, Md., Ted Ginn Jr. returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown and the Carolina Panthers’ defense scored three times in a 34-27 preseason victory over the mistake-prone Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night.

Drayton Florence took an interception 71 yards into the end zoneand Thomas Davis scored on a 2-yard fumble return.
