Green Bay signs Clay Matthews to extension

One big deal done for the Green Bay Packers, one to go.

The Packers locked up star linebacker Clay Matthews with a long-term extension Wednesday, and also are negotiating with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

With Matthews’ deal done, the Packers can turn all of their attention to Rodgers, whose extension is expected to make him the highest-paid player in the league. Agent David Dunn represents Matthews and Rodgers.

“Hopefully, that’s the next order of business,” Matthews said about Rodgers’ extension.

SEAHAWKS: Antoine Winfield is officially a member of the team after it formally announced a one-year deal with the former All-Pro cornerback.

The Seahawks announced the deal with Winfield on Wednesday. Winfield reached agreement on a deal with the Seahawks late last week.

Winfield joins one of the most talented defensive backfields in the NFL, likely as an extra cornerback to play in the slot.

JETS: Cornerback Darrelle Revis could be entering his final week with the team. His new boss, general manager John Idzik, said nothing Wednesday to change that perception.

While refusing to acknowledge he’s engaged in trade talks with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Idzik indicated he’s open to trading Revis, who has only one year remaining on his contract.

“Yeah, we would definitely look at any trade possibilities and see if it benefits the Jets,” said Idzik, addressing questions regarding Revis at the team’s pre-draft news conference.

BRONCOS: Denver finished tied for the fourth-most offensive plays last season, but Peyton Manning wants his team to play even faster in 2013.

Denver ran 1,090 offensive plays during the regular season, an average of 68.13 per game, but Manning wants the Broncos to get closer to the league-leading New England Patriots, who ran 1,191 plays (74.44 per game). The Broncos also finished second in scoring offense to the Patriots last season.

“For whatever reason, our offense plays better the faster we go. I think that was clear cut last season,” Manning told the Denver Post.
