Colts will play to win

Indianapolis Colts defensive end Robert Mathis couldn’t care less about the No. 1 draft pick. All he wants is another win.

Some of Indianapolis’ die-hard fans are urging the team’s brain trust to take a different tack, benching starters and losing Sunday’s season finale at Jacksonville so it can get the top pick.

“It’s better not to respond to that at all,” Mathis said when asked about the fans’ plea. “We play to win.”

The stakes are high.

A Colts (2-13) victory over the Jags (4-11) coupled with a loss by St. Louis (2-13) to San Francisco, would drop the Colts from the No. 1 overall slot down to No. 2, and likely out of the Andrew Luck sweepstakes.

COWBOYS: Quarterback Tony Romo said Wednesday that he expects to play Sunday night at the New York Giants and he’s “experimenting” with wearing a glove. Romo was limited in practice Wednesday after bruising his right hand in Saturday’s loss to Philadelphia.

RAIDERS: Oakland got a big boost for their offense heading into their must-win season finale when big-play receiver Jacoby Ford practiced for the first time in more than a month.

Ford, a former Clemson star, practiced on a limited basis Wednesday for the first time since spraining his left foot on Nov. 10 at San Diego and the Raiders (8-7) hope he can play Sunday against the Chargers. Oakland needs to win that game and get some help to make the playoffs.

DOLPHINS: Linebacker Jason Taylor says he’ll retire after this season, his 15th in the NFL.

Taylor leads all active players with 139½ sacks, which ranks sixth all-time. He has six fumble returns for touchdowns, an NFL record.

PACKERS: Offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith said Ndamukong Suh called him to apologize a few days after the Lions defensive lineman’s infamous Thanksgiving Day stomp.

“He’s cool, he apologized, and there’s no hard feelings and that’s pretty much it,” Dietrich-Smith said.

With the Lions coming to Lambeau Field for Sunday’s regular-season finale, Dietrich-Smith doesn’t expect anything out of the ordinary to happen between him and Suh.
