Hurd denies dealing drugs to players

Wide receiver Sam Hurd, who faces federal drug charges, was released by the Chicago Bears Friday.

The attorney for Sam Hurd said Friday that his client had never sold drugs to other NFL players, hoping to put any rumors to rest as the wide receiver without a team prepares to fight federal drug charges.

Less than an hour after Hurd was cut by the Chicago Bears, defense attorney Brett Greenfield told reporters that his client planned to fight the charges and wanted one thing made clear.

“Sam has asked me to address one point, with respect to the rumors that Sam has been supplying drugs to other members of the NFL, out of respect to the NFL, out of respect to teammates and out of respect to other players, he 100 percent denies that allegation,” Greenfield said. “It is patently and totally false. It just didn’t happen.”

League spokesman Brian McCarthy said the NFL was closely monitoring the situation.

STEELERS: The NFL has denied James Harrison’s appeal of a one-game suspension for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Cleveland quarterback Colt McCoy, and the linebacker will sit out Monday night’s game against San Francisco.

The ruling was made by NFL-NFLPA on-field appeals officer Ted Cottrell and announced Friday.

PANTHERS: Coach Ron Rivera says he won’t decide until today if Olindo Mare will remain the team’s kicker this Sunday against the Houston Texans or if he’ll hand the job over to rookie Adi Kunalic.

The Panthers signed Kunalic on Tuesday after Mare missed a 36-yard field goal attempt in the fourth quarter that would have given his team a 26-24 lead against Atlanta. The Panthers went on to lose the game 31-23.

PACKERS: With right guard Josh Sitton’s injury status unclear and veteran left tackle Chad Clifton still sidelined, Green Bay continues to tinker with their offensive line going into Sunday’s game at Kansas City.

Sitton returned to practice this week after being out the last two games with a sprained knee. The Packers are giving him a chance to play against the Chiefs, listing him as questionable.
