Favre mum on return

LaDainian Tomlinson says Brett Favre gave no indication whether he would return for another season when the two chatted recently about playing for the Minnesota Vikings.

Tomlinson, who signed a two-year deal with the New York Jets on Sunday, met with Vikings officials in Minnesota last Thursday about the prospect of joining the team. He said Tuesday that he also heard from Favre, who didn't say much.

Tomlinson says he got no hint of Favre's plans and didn't ask out of respect for the quarterback.

LIONS: Last spring, Matthew Stafford was trying to fit in with Detroit.

Things have changed in 11 months. Not only has the former Georgia standout become the unquestioned No. 1 quarterback and recovered from knee and shoulder surgeries, he is even helping the team with personnel decisions.

Last week, when the Lions were pursuing free agent wide receiver Nate Burleson , they had Stafford make the phone call the minute the market opened.

The move worked, and Stafford hopes that Burleson will give him a second receiving threat and take some of the burden off former Georgia Tech star Calvin Johnson .

BILLS: Coach Chan Gailey isn't prepared to name a starting quarterback, and anticipates holding an open competition going into training camp.

Gailey wouldn't rule out selecting a quarterback in the draft in April or pursuing a veteran in either free agency or by trade.

The quarterback position was unsettled last year after Trent Edwards lost his starting job to Ryan Fitzpatrick . Both return this season, as does untested third-stringer Brian Brohm .

FALCONS: Released former first-round pick Tye Hill and signed safety Matt Giordano .

In eight games with the Falcons, Hill had seven tackles and one interception. Giordano, who played with the Packers last year, has been in 60 games, including six starts, and totaled 79 tackles with three interceptions.

CHIEFS: Signed free agent left guard Ryan Lilja in another step toward beefing up their offensive line.

RAVENS: The wife of former Raven Michael McCrary has withdrawn her petition for a protective order against her husband.

Mary Haley McCrary had claimed her husband threatened her and a nanny who cares for their young daughter.

ROETHLISBERGER UPDATE: An attorney for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger says the two-time Super Bowl winner has yet to meet with Georgia authorities who are investigating a sexual assault allegation made against him by a 20-year-old college student and there is no timetable for the interview.
