Former Westside, Georgia standout Sanders Commings conducts camp in area

While getting ready for his second season with the Kansas City Chiefs, former Westside and Georgia standout Sanders Commings took time out to work with area football players.

With the Chiefs training camp opening July 24, Commings flew into Augusta on Thursday and was on the field Friday night at Grovetown High School working with local youngsters at the East Georgia Pop Warner Local Heroes Football Camp.

“I wanted to come back to the Augusta area,” said Commings, who came when Ryan Bowers asked him to be a part of the camp. “When I was a kid I didn’t get to do anything like this, so I wanted to give the kids something positive.”

Commings will turn his attention to high school players today at the Sanders Commings Football Camp at Westside from 6-8 p.m.

Commings, who started his last two seasons with the Bulldogs at cornerback, was taken in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He played in two games last year, missing most of the season because of a fractured collarbone.

Heading into this season, the Chiefs moved Commings to safety.

“In our defensive scheme, safeties have to be able to cover just as well as our corners,” Commings said.

He was able to pass on lessons he learned from his first year in the league to former teammate and friend Aaron Murray, selected in the fifth round of the 2014 draft.

“I told him it’s a job, one day at a time,” Commings said. “I told him just be patient because he’s used to being at the top. From Day 1 at Georgia he was pretty much the man. Now he has three veteran quarterbacks in front of him so I told him to be patient. I told him he was talented enough to just get in the playbook.”

It’s the type of advice he follows.

“I definitely believe that I have the talent, I’m just trying to get the game down mentally,” he said.

While in Augusta, Commings is keeping on eye on what is ahead at Chiefs camp.

“It’s a rev-up period,” Commings said. “It’s go-time. I’ve been training hard getting ready for this camp and I’m still going to do that over the next few days and go into camp ready.”
