Dollar General’s expanded sponsorship at Joe Gibbs Racing means Brian Vickers will have a full-time job with the race team in the Nationwide Series.
The retail chain announced it also would sponsor Matt Kenseth for 17 races in the No. 20 Toyota next season.
Vickers already agreed to drive eight selected Sprint Cup Series races for Michael Waltrip racing next season. His job in the Nationwide Series means he will stay in the Toyota camp.
Kenseth will replace Joey Logano next season after spending the past 13 years at Roush Fenway Racing.
QUICK TO HELP: The NASCAR community was quick to respond after Superstorm Sandy.
Lowe’s said it would donate $1 million and match Jimmie Johnson’s earnings from last Sunday’s AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. He won the race – and $492,086 – to get the project for local relief efforts off to a fast start.
Johnson and Hendrick Motorsports also kicked in another $48,000.
Other teams also were committed to the recovery effort in the Northeast.
Martin Truex Jr. grew up 30 miles north of Atlantic City, N.J., in Mayetta. A tree fell at his home, crushing the first car he ever owned – a Jeep.
His No. 56 Toyota had a decal during last Sunday’s race asking people to donate through his foundation.
NASCAR got into the relief effort, too.
The sanctioning body is asking fans to donate through NASCAR.com, or by texting “REDCROSS” to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross.
NO TRUCKS FANS: As a track owner and promoter, Bruton Smith said it’s increasingly difficult to sell tickets for Camping World Truck Series races.
He playfully said one solution might be requiring the trucks to haul things in the rear beds to spice up the event.
Nonetheless, Smith remains committed to the trucks. He has truck races at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Kentucky Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway and Texas, although he said it’s tough to fill the grandstands.
