The Augusta RiverHawks announced the addition of defenseman Ricky Helmbrecht in a trade with the Knoxville Ice Bears on Tuesday.
Helmbrecht, a 27-year-old in his second season in the SPHL, is going to the RiverHawks for the rights to forward Chad Ziegler.
Helmbrecht has two goals and eight points in 26 games this season. He recorded 14 goals and 33 points for Knoxville last season.
Ziegler is currently on loan with the ECHL’s Greenville Road Warriors. He was promoted Jan. 16 after recording eight goals and 18 points in 33 games for the RiverHawks in his rookie year.
“Helmbrecht is a good defenseman who provides a lot of offense, as well,” RiverHawks vice president Ken Vezina said. “I think he’s one of the best skaters in the league. He moves the puck extremely well.”
Vezina said Augusta has missed a puck-moving defenseman since William Lacasse was loaned to the ECHL’s Idaho Steelheads on Jan. 8.
“Helmbrecht is a guy we’ve looked fondly on in the past,” Vezina said. “Ziegler isn’t here to help us, and we have to worry about ourselves right now. We have to start winning games.”
