The Augusta RiverHawks announced Tuesday they have rescheduled this week’s home games “due to problems with the ice.”
According to a team statement, Thursday’s game against the Huntsville Havoc will be pushed back to March 14, and Saturday’s game against the Knoxville Ice Bears will be played March 5.
The RiverHawks said tickets to either of those games can be exchanged for any remaining regular season home games. They can be exchanged at either the James Brown Arena box office or through the RiverHawks’ front office.
RiverHawks vice president Ken Vezina said the ice in the arena began melting due to a leak in piping that keeps the ice cold. Once the leaks are found and fixed, the system will return to making ice, which could take several days.
“We had to postpone those two, because we didn’t want to have a last-second decision on the games,” he said.
The RiverHawks were preparing for a critical three-game stretch between Thursday and Saturday that included two games against Huntsville, which sits three points ahead of Augusta for the eighth and final SPHL playoff spot. Now, the RiverHawks will play the Havoc once this week – at Huntsville on Friday.
As a result, the RiverHawks lose a Saturday night at the box office, trading it for a Tuesday. Also, the final game against Huntsville will come at the beginning of what is now three games in three nights between March 14-16, with two of those on the road.
