Davidson rower Lindsay Crute commits to Tulsa

Lindsay Crute, of John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet High School, signed with University of Tulsa to row.

Jackie and Thomas Crute hoodwinked their daughter four summers ago.

Lindsay Crute knew nothing about her parents’ plan for her to attend a rowing camp at The Boathouse. They simply dropped her off, telling her they’d be back at the end of the day – the first of many days spent there.

“They just dropped me and didn’t tell me anything about it,” Crute said. “I loved it the first day. I already wanted to be signed up for the fall.”

Crute, a member of the Augusta Junior Rowing Club, signed up Wednesday to continue with the sport for four more years. The John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School senior penned her name to a letter of intent to compete at the University of Tulsa, a Division I member of Conference USA.

Crute said she received interest from a handful of colleges in the northeast, especially Bucknell and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. But when she visited the Oklahoma school in September, she was hooked.

“It just seemed like a nice place,” Crute said. “All the people were really friendly. I felt included, though I wasn’t already there.”

Crute is in her fourth year in rowing. Her main event is sculling (two oars) doubles with her partner, Alison Lemmon. Crute said she enjoys the physical nature of the sport.

“I like being able to challenge myself,” the 17-year-old Crute said. “You can never be quite as good as you want to be. You always want to be better.”

After participating in the fall season’s final event – the Head of the South regatta – Saturday, the Augusta Junior Rowing Club is having a “fun week” this week, Augusta Rowing Club coach Michael Cobb said. Crute is not playing any games. Instead, she continues to work out during the two-hour weekday practices.

“She works very, very hard,” Cobb said. “She’s dedicated to the sport. She’s improved ever since I’ve been with her.”
