Teams out to extend runs

Michael Scott has found plenty of pride in Aquinas’ recent road results.

After a two-point loss at home in the region championship game, the Aquinas boys basketball team has knocked off two teams in the Class A state playoffs on the road.

“We’ve been on a roll all playoffs,” Scott said.

The Irish (23-6) will be on neutral ground to play their toughest opponent yet in the tournament when they meet Whitefield Academy at 8:30 tonight at Marietta High School. The Wolfpack are 26-3.

Scott and fellow sophomore Ahmed Hill have been Aquinas’ leaders, combining for 39 points in the win against Mount Pisgah.

Tonight, the Wolfpack figure to be led by Georgia signee Kenny Gaines.

“It’s going to be me and him going at it,” Hill said.

When play begins at Savannah State today, two schools will take ownership of the court for about three hours.

Laney and Morgan County meet for both a boys and girls game in the Class AA state tournament quarterfinals. The girls play at 4 p.m., and the boys will follow at 5:30 p.m.

The teams aren’t strangers to one another. The Laney girls played Morgan County in this round last season, surviving 71-67.

As for the boys, Laney beat the Bulldogs on Jan. 16. However, since that defeat, Morgan County has gone 14-0 and won by double figures in all but four games.

Westside girls coach Ivory Hugee can’t say he expected his squad to have this kind of season, but he didn’t think it was impossible, either. But here it is, 26-4 and a game away from advancing to the Class AAA state semifinals.

Westside is 20-1 since a 10-point loss to Cross Creek on Dec. 16. One of those wins included a victory against the Lady Razorbacks in the Region 3-AAA Tournament.

The only loss during the 21-game stretch came to Washington County, which is also in the state quarterfinals and is the defending state champion.

“I’m just extremely proud of them,” Hugee said. “We’ve been blessed to have a lot of athleticism on the team.”
