Thinking about Aquinas’ big wins in program history, coach Matt LeZotte believes the most recent victory might be the best.
Aquinas beat Wilkinson County for the first time Friday, bettering a team that was not only ranked in the top five in Class A but was also a state semifinalist in 2010.
“It was arguably the biggest win ever,” LeZotte said. “To go out there — and we didn’t play well Friday night — to be able to overcome the turnovers the way we did goes to show we have a quality team.”
It was Aquinas’ fourth win in a row after it opened the season with a loss to Landmark Christian.
Since that game, LeZotte said his team’s focus has been different. He said players like Grey Klosinski, Corey Gomillion and Collin Oliver have become leaders on and off the field while running back Brendan Douglas has been climbing up the chart of local rushing leaders.
With a bye week, Aquinas (4-1) knows its winning streak can’t end this Friday. But with region games against Lincoln County, Washington-Wilkes and Warren County still to come, Aquinas still isn’t assured a state playoff bid even with the streak.
“It was nice to get that win and be 2-0, but our region is so stinkin’ good,” LeZotte said.
MORE DOMINANCE: There wasn’t much out of the ordinary about Burke County’s 63-0 win against Westside on Friday.
The Bears, who have outscored the Patriots by a combined 135-0 the past two meetings, have won 11 consecutive games against area foes, with the last loss coming to Washington County on Oct. 23, 2009.
Since that defeat, Burke County has scored at least 40 points in a game seven times.
The only area team to get within single digits has been Washington County last season, when the Bears won 28-21.
DO IT AGAIN: For the second year in a row, Butler can begin its season 5-0.
Before last year’s 5-0 start, the Bulldogs hadn’t even opened 4-0 since 1977, when they won their first five games.
Friday’s 20-7 result against Grovetown means Cross Creek stands in the way of another 5-0 mark.
According to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association’s Web site, this is the first time in team history Butler has been 4-0 in two consecutive seasons.
