At the beginning of the year, one of the goals the Westside boys tennis team set for itself was to be repeat as undefeated Region 3-AAA champs.
Time to move on to the next goal.
On Thursday afternoon at Patriots Park, the Patriots blitzed their way through Burke County, Grovetown and Richmond Academy, winning each match 3-0, finishing what they set out to do.
“They wanted it real bad,” said Westside head coach David Bradberry. “It would have wiped out all our hard work this year had we lost.”
The Patriots’ (17-1, 15-0) only loss of the year came to out-of-region Aquinas on March 15.
The Patriots beat the Musketeers 3-2 earlier in the year, but this time it wouldn’t come down to the end.
The Patriots’ No. 1 doubles team of Tyler and Jordan Brabenec won first in the title tilt, beating Jack Guitton and Nico Hoernle 6-0, 6-1.
“We pretty much expected to win every one of our matches,” Brabenec said.
Baylor Ronemus, the Patriots’ No. 2 singles player held off Xavier Price 6-3, 6-4, and Jacob Watts beat Tyler Melvin 6-1, 5-7, (7-4) for the win.
The Musketeers’ Ivan Smith was up a set on Will Kittles when the match was halted.
The Patriots will enter the state tournament as a No. 1 seed.
“We did what we set out to do today and I couldn’t be prouder,” Bradberry said. “Now we have to look at how far we can go in the state.”
Much like Westside, the Musketeers rolled through the competition, beating Washington County and Thomson 3-0 before falling to the Patriots.
