Thomson, Westside split basketball games

Tripping from turnovers, Thomson settled at the line to stay perfect.

The undefeated Bulldogs boys basketball team, in a rare close game this season, made seven of the last eight free-throw attempts to hang on for a 64-59 win at Westside on Saturday night.

Thomson (9-0) got 20 points from Ryan Kelly.

“We’re confident they would do what needed to be done,” Bulldogs coach Michael Thomas said. “We hadn’t had a close game, so now we know how to react.”

Once up 35-17 on a Tre Parker basket inside, Thomson almost coughed up the lead under a wave of turnovers in the second half. Passes went out of bounds and the Bulldogs also had a 10-second violation.

But as Westside charged within 59-55 with about a minute to go, Thomson was in the midst of clutch foul shots. Starting with Kelly, Thomson made those seven free throws. It also got a big late score from Frank Brinson as Westside tried to get another steal on a double-team.

The Bulldogs held off the Patriots, who got 18 points from Rashon Taylor. He had 11 points in the third quarter alone, helping Westside start its comeback attempt.

There was no late rally try in the girls game, however, as Westside won 60-40.

The Lady Patriots led by 11 after the first quarter, with Jahmia Bradley making three first-half 3-pointers. The senior finished with 22 points.

Bradley received help in the paint from Marian Ware, who scored all 10 of Westside’s points in the fourth quarter to finish with 18. Ware battled on the glass, scoring close after getting an offensive rebound.

Though only two other players scored for Westside, the Lady Patriots had more than enough to cruise.

“Our first five, we’re OK,” Westside coach Ivory Hugee said. “We just got to develop more depth. When we go to the bench, we’ve got some young players.”
