PETTICOAT JUNCTION — With each error and delayed throw, Silver Bluff made sure it was ready to run.
Not afraid to put pressure on the defense, the opportunistic Lady Bulldogs cruised to a 16-1 (5 innings) home win against Woodland on Thursday in the first game of the SCHSL Class AA, District V state playoffs.
Silver Bluff scored in all four innings it went to the plate, including a combined 13-run burst in the second and third innings.
“It’s always good to have a home playoff game and have a good win,” Silver Bluff coach Eric Hofstetter said.
Silver Bluff will play Battery Creek at 6 tonight after it beat Edisto on Thursday night.
The Lady Bulldogs had 15 hits, with Alexus Robertson, Haley Key and Kelsey Andrews each picking up three hits. Together, the trio had nine RBI.
After so many players reached safely, Silver Bluff wasn’t afraid to try for the extra base when a chance showed up.
If Woodland missed the cutoff player or waited to throw, the Lady Bulldogs had no trouble grabbing the next base.
In the second inning, Silver Bluff scored six times, with Andrews driving in a pair with an RBI single.
In the third, the Lady Bulldogs did one better, getting seven runs. Andrews drove in another run and Ashley Matlock also did herself with a shot past the shortstop. Two more runs came home when Madison Morgan hit a ball to center and off the glove.
Pitching with big leads, Silver Bluff pitchers Key and Karly Kinard didn’t have much trouble keeping the game a blowout. In fact, in just two innings of work, Kinard struck out five without allowing a baserunner as Woodland was helpless against her.
The Lady Wolverines finished with only one hit but made seven errors.
