Locally tied golfers sign with Clemson women's team

North Augusta's JoJo Higgenbottom and Jessica Hoang sign to USC Aiken and Clemson.

Jessica Hoang had options, but she realized she wanted to stay close to home.

The North Augusta senior will now get a chance to start something special.

The golfer will be part of Clemson’s new women’s golf team, as Hoang signed with the Tigers on Thursday afternoon. Clemson will begin play in the 2013-2014 school year.

But Hoang, ranked No. 45 for the 2013 class in Golfweek’s junior rankings, isn’t the only golfer who will give Clemson an Augusta-area feel next season, as two other players with local ties have signed with the team. Besides Hoang, Strom Thurmond’s McKenzie Talbert and former Martinez resident Ashlan Ramsey inked with the Tigers.

“It’s very exciting,” Hoang said. “Ashlan and McKenzie and I have been competing with each other since we were 10. We’re like a family.”

Talbert signed her letter of intent after a stellar high school career. Talbert began playing for the Rebels while in seventh grade, and challenged for state championships while still in middle school. She broke through as a freshman, and won three individual titles for the Rebels. Her string of championships came to an end last month when she finished fourth in the state tournament.

Ramsey also signed her letter of intent to play at Clemson. She will join her older sister, Taylor, on the team next fall. They will have the same eligibility because Taylor is redshirting this season, according to the Clemson athletic web site.

Now at John Milledge Academy in Milledgeville, Ga., Ramsey is the reigning GISA Class AAA individual champion with her 67 score back in April at Doublegate Country Club in Albany, Ga. She is currently ranked the No. 1 girls golfer in Georgia.
