North Augusta QB Reece is player of the week

Trib Reece

SCHOOL: North Augusta

YEAR: Sophomore

HT./WT.: 6-4/175

North Augusta quarterback Trib Reece saw the safety move to the other side and immediately knew he had an advantage.

He now had a receiver in the perfect situation: one-on-one; the connection with Dre Dunbar ended with an 82-yard touchdown pass.

The long pass was just one play where Reece showed he’s growing into the starter’s role after taking over for the injured Cody Turner. And by the game’s conclusion, Reece had thrown for 287 yards and two touchdown passes — he also had another score on the ground — in North Augusta’s 44-6 road win against Lexington. For his big game, Reece is The Augusta Chronicle’s Player of the Week.

Besides getting used to leading a high-powered and high-paced attack, Reece was worried about his nerves when he got the starter’s job.

“It’s just about conquering and getting over the nervousness,” Reece said.

But the sophomore has mostly shined, as the Yellow Jackets have scored a combined 86 points the past two games.

At 6-foot-4 and 175 pounds, Reece has tasked himself with adding 15 pounds by next year. From an on-the-field standpoint, Reece is mostly concerned with improving his footwork.

That would help for this week’s game at home against 6-1 White Knoll.

But, at the very least, Reece will walk onto the field more confident than he was when he first started.

“They’re fine,” Reece said about his nerves. “I don’t feel them anymore.”
