SCHOOL: Richmond Academy
Butler wasn’t going to stop scoring, so C.J. Welcher was going to keep on running.
In a wild 48-34 win, Richmond Academy’s Welcher provided the loudest fireworks with his 338 yards and seven touchdowns. Welcher’s big night — the single-game touchdown total tied him for third in state history — made him The Augusta Chronicle’s player of the week.
“I just wanted to be remembered,” Welcher said about playing in his last scheduled home game. “All the other past seniors gave it their all and I wanted to continue the tradition.”
In the past, Welcher had been held back by ankle and back injuries and even a broken nose — “it was always something,” Musketeers coach Chris Hughes said.
But the senior has stayed healthy this season, rushing for 1,216 yards and 17 touchdowns. Against Butler, the Musketeers needed those eye-popping numbers, as the Bulldogs led 28-27 after three quarters.
It was all Welcher and the line from there, however, with the back adding three touchdowns in the final quarter.
“He came back really well,” Hughes said. “He’s a really good back, and now that he’s healthy, he’s been a stud.”
