Lakeside falls to Jones County

Jones County 49, Lakeside 35

In a game with region playoff implications, the ground attack of Jones County outmatched the air assault from Lakeside.

The Greyhounds rushed for 522 yards without throwing a single pass, spoiling Lakeside’s homecoming with the 49-35 win Friday night.

The teams fell into a tie for third place in Region 2-AAAAA, as the Panthers (4-4, 3-2) saw their three-game win streak stop.

“We got beat by a good football team,” said Panthers head coach Jarrett Troxler, who compared the Greyhounds offensive line to Thomson.

“They’ve got good players. They’re big up front.”

The teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter and went into the second quarter tied at 14. That’s when the Panthers fell apart a bit and were chasing the Greyhounds the rest of the way.

Down 21-14, an interception led to a 22-yard touchdown run by Jones County’s Walker Juhan. A fumble on the next series gave the ball back to the Greyhounds.

After a punt, the Panthers drove 70 yards to the Jones County 5, but ultimately turned the ball over on downs with 1:30 in the half.

“Not getting a touchdown down there before the half hurt us,” said Troxler.

The Greyhounds (5-3, 3-2) rushed for 303 yards in the first half and finished with 522 yards on 54 carries.

Undre Williams had 28 carries for 243 yards and three scores, Juhan ran it 17 times for 159 yards and Jo Jo Gibbons rushed four times for 111 yards and a touchdown.

Hunter Banks came on in relief of quarterback Tanner Brassell in the second quarter and with the Panthers behind.

He completed 19 of 27 passes for 243 yards with an interception in his first extended action since hurting his knee against Thomson in the team’s second game. Banks found a good connection with receiver McTier Mosley, who caught 12 balls for 135 yards.

The Panthers held the Greyhounds scoreless in the third quarter, but after closing to within seven points at 35-28, the Greyhounds scored twice more, punching in a short touchdown for their final score after recovering a fumble.

PLAY OF THE GAME: Late in the first quarter, Lakeside quarterback Tanner Brassell found Josh Jones who outdueled a Greyhound defender at the Jones County 40, broke a tackle and raced for the 70-yard score, tying the game at 14.

WHY JONES COUNTY WON: The Greyhounds ran 54 times for 522 yards and seven touchdowns.
