Greenbrier High School is teaming up with University Hospital and Orthopedic Associates of Augusta to raise cancer awareness at its softball tournament this weekend.
The pair will be set up at Patriots Park on Friday and Saturday and will distribute information at Greenbrier’s Mark Moseley Memorial Diamond Classic. The 25-team tournament is named for Greenbrier’s former assistant coach who died of cancer two years ago.
“We’ll be wearing pink and several other teams will be as well,” Greenbrier softball coach Garrett Black said.
Black said seeing firsthand what the effects of cancer are changes one’s perspective. It motivated him to rename the tournament in honor of his friend.
“He meant so much to Greenbrier and Columbia County and I wanted to do something in his name,” Black said.
Teams will be coming from all over the state and games will be played at four locations: Patriots Park and Greenbrier, Grovetown and Harlem high schools. Cost is $5 and children younger than 10 are admitted free.
