Glenn Hills wallops Josey

With only four seniors, Glenn Hills came into the 2012 football season as one of the area’s younger teams.

That didn’t stop the Spartans from starting the season with a bang Friday night.

With the help of strong performances by juniors Earl Cobb and Kahlige Flegler, Glenn Hills stormed past visiting Josey, 41-12, avenging last year’s defeat.

Already down after Cobb’s 11-yard touchdown run, Josey opened the second quarter by laying the ball on the ground.

It would become a theme for the Eagles (1-1); they lost four fumbles and had a fifth turnover on a second-quarter interception.

It appeared as if Glenn Hills (1-0) would not take advantage, as two procedure penalties and a pair of holding calls moved the offense all the way back to the 5-yard line.

Facing second-and-40, junior quarterback Santo Nina found Cobb on a crossing route over the middle.

Cobb made a quick move past defenders, then sprinted all the way to the end zone for a 95-yard touchdown completion.

Josey got within one score on Juwan Tolbert’s 32-yard touchdown run midway through the quarter, set up by Bart Corley’s interception.

However, the rest of the game belonged to the home-standing Spartans.

Flegler closed the half with a 30-yard touchdown run. Demetris Spearman’s 2-point conversion run made it 21-6 at the break.

After another Josey fumble with four minutes to go in the third quarter, Flegler scored again on a 3-yard plunge.

Then, the third consecutive scoring play for the junior came on a 68-yard interception return that increased the lead to 35-6.

Cobb did a little of every-thing on the night for the Spartans.

He provided strong defense in the secondary; finished with 141 yards from scrimmage; lined up at quarterback, running back and wide receiver; and even kicked an extra point.

He also scored three touchdowns, the last coming on a 13-yard run early in the fourth quarter.

Josey had the final score of the game.

After the snap went over reserve quarterback Chris Reid’s head, linebacker Tyler Ridley alertly scooped up the fumble and took it 22 yards for the touchdown.

PLAY OF THE GAME: On second-and-40 deep in their own territory, the Spartans miraculously scored. Quarterback Santo Nina found Earl Cobb crossing over the middle, and Cobb made a move past several defenders en route to a 95-yard touchdown reception.

STARS OF THE GAME: Cobb (141 total yards) and Kahlige Flegler (95 yards from scrimmage and a 68- yard punt return score) both had three touchdowns.

WHY GLENN HILLS WON: The Spartans took advantage of turnovers and made fewer mistakes.

WHY JOSEY LOST: The Eagles turned the ball over five times and had 110 penalty yards.
