Cross Creek girls basketball hopes for big season

The Lady Razorbacks are ready to run.

With all the key contributors back from a 21-8 squad, the Cross Creek girls basketball team hopes to keep on running deep into the state playoffs.

Though lacking in height, the Lady Razorbacks have plenty of athleticism, and they intend to use it.

A year ago, that quickness led to an 11-win improvement from the previous season. Cross Creek actually started 10-0 before a mini slump at the end of the season meant it got saddled with a fourth seed for the Class AAA state tournament. It was subsequently knocked out in the first round in a close game, and ended the season by losing five of six.

But the progress was noticed.

“We finally got the respect we wanted,” said Jasmine Kilgore, who’s sidelined for a couple weeks with a torn muscle in her knee. “We had to work for it.”

With Kilgore, Ashleigh Outler and Tia Pullens among the returning talent, coach Kim Schlein’s bunch will try to post an even better season, only this time it won’t sneak up on most folks.

That applies even though the Lady Razorbacks moved up to Class AAAA following reclassification. Cross Creek is with Burke County, Butler, Glenn Hills, Hephzibah and Richmond Academy in one Region 3-AAAA subregion.

Just like a year ago, those opponents must handle Cross Creek’s quickness and press. Out of desire and necessity due to the height disadvantage, the Lady Razorbacks hope to get out and run.

With essentially the same team back – the differences are about new players, not departed ones – Schlein knows the areas where she wants to see improvement. Schlein expects better fundamentals and wants fewer turnovers; there were times Cross Creek wanted to run too much and too quickly.

But the potential is there for a big season.

“I want to go all the way,” Kilgore said. “I want to end my senior year with a ring.”
