Burke County's Green stars in road win

Bears' QB had five scores

WAYNESBORO, Ga. — With one run, one read, Donquell Green concluded he and his offense would be difficult to stop.

On his first run of the game, the Burke County quarterback broke free for 34 yards to start his big game against Class AAAAAA Coffee. Green, a junior, finished with 246 rushing yards, 113 passing yards and accounted for all five Bears touchdowns in a 33-21 win that made him The Augusta Chronicle’s Player of the Week.

“I thought about it, and I was like, ‘If they couldn’t stop that play, they’re going to be in trouble,’ ” Green remembers thinking after his first run. “I kind of figured I would have a big game throwing-wise and running-wise.”

After rushing for 1,192 rushing yards while backing up Corey Mayton during Burke County’s 2011 state championship season, Green has assumed the starter’s role this season and has been posting big numbers.

Because he knew the rushing yards would be there because of his speed, Green was intent on improving his passing to force defenses to spread out and thus give him even more running room. This past Friday, his aerial growth culminated with those 113 yards on 8 of 9 passing.

As for his team, Green thinks the road win against a larger school helps quell any concerns fans might have had after Burke County’s season-opening loss to Thomson.

“We went down there and proved we are actually a very good team that really just got outplayed against Thomson,” Green said. “It meant a lot.”
