Silver Bluff stuns Barnwell in overtime

Bulldogs 28, Warhorses 27, OT

PETTICOAT JUNCTION, S.C. — The line of red tail lights stretched long down Desoto Drive as Silver Bluff stared down defeat deep in the fourth quarter Friday night.

Those fans won’t believe what happened after they left.

The Bulldogs posted a stunning comeback, scoring two touchdowns in the final three minutes before scratching out a 28-27 overtime win over Barnwell.

“We just never stop fighting,” lineman James Jacks said. “At Silver Bluff, we never give up.”

Silver Bluff (9-1) won the Region 5-AA title the week before, and coach Al Lown said his team might have got caught looking ahead while falling down 21-0 in the first half.

The Bulldogs, who have a bye Friday night for the first round of the playoffs, will spend this week trying to sort out what happened against the Warhorses.

Barnwell (4-6), which lost its fifth in a row to Silver Bluff, took advantage of two fumble recoveries in the first two quarters.

The Warhorses dominated the time of possession with their running game and built an early lead on rushing touchdowns by Raheem Bradley (3 yards) and Devonta Ashley (32 yards). In the second quarter, Jevonte Dunbar added an 18-yard rushing touchdown.

The Warhorses were clutching to a 21-7 lead late in the game when Bradley fumbled in Silver Bluff territory. On the next play, Jalen Jackson threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to McKenzie Wilson with three minutes remaining.

Barnwell recovered the onside kick and tried to run out the clock. On fourth and 17 from midfield, the snap sailed over Dunbar’s head.

Silver Bluff started its final drive on the 30 with 27 seconds left. Jackson threw two completions, down to the 3 yard line.

With Silver Bluff out of timeouts with 12 seconds left, Jackson scored, and Pedro Zambrano added the PAT.

In the extra period, Shaquez Wright gave Silver Bluff the lead with a 5-yard run and Zambrano added the extra point. Barnwell responded with a 1-yard scoring run from Bradley. The Warhorses went for the win, but the Bulldogs stuffed Dunbar at the 1.
