Lions share spotlight in blowout win

MARTINEZ, Ga. — On a night when quarterback Tyler Roberson rushed for more than 200 yards and three touchdowns, he had to share the spotlight with one of his linemen. Fellow senior Matt Herzwurm threw for a score, rushed for another and blocked a punt in Augusta Christian’s 58-26 win over Porter-Gaud.

Herzwurm, the holder on special teams, twice turned point after attempts into successful two-point conversions by improvising. He recovered a poor snap in time to find Kobie Brinson in the end zone to cap a 22-6 first quarter and later lowered his shoulder on a scramble after mishandling the snap for a punishing push across the goal line and another two-point conversion.

He couldn’t help but soak it all in after a blowout win on homecoming night of his senior year.

“Kobie went up and made the play on the first one,” Herzwurm said. “The second one I just mishandled it so I decided to go around and I might as well run it in.”

Roberson said he didn’t mind sharing the spotlight with a teammate who has been his friend since kindergarten. The two have played center and quarterback since sixth grade.

“He always teases me saying he’s going to be better at me at quarterback,” Roberson said. “I saw his arm tonight.”

Herzwurm also blocked a punt that was returned for a touchdown but only after Roberson had already established himself as the game’s primary offensive threat. The senior quarterback rushed for a pair of 53-yard touchdowns on his first two carries. He saw the Porter-Gaud defense on each option read, and the Cyclones forced Roberson to call his own number.

“It’s an inverted veer. I read the end,” he said. “If he crashes up and tries to stop Thomas (Banks), I hit the hole as a diveback. But if he tries to stop me, I let Thomas try to string it out to the outside.”

The offense, which accounted for seven of Augusta Christian’s eight touchdowns, made up for a defense that allowed four rushing touchdowns, including three to quarterback Thomas Rogers.

“We had some breakdowns,” head coach Keith Walton said. “The passing game wasn’t as good as it could have been. But they were doing some things defensively that we hadn’t seen all year so we had to adjust.”

Roberson completed each of his first four passing attempts but connected with his receivers just once over the final 11 passes. Several passes were dropped.

The win set the stage for next week’s matchup between the top two teams in the South Carolina Independent Schools Association when Augusta Christian (7-0, 6-0) goes to Hammond for a showdown of undefeated teams.
